How A Service Dog Is Trained

There are a wide variety of dogs used as service dogs for different purposes.

From guide dogs for the blind to hearing dogs from the deaf and dogs for general assistance for handicapped people, service dogs can provide constant aid to the person in need whilst be a loving companion that will be at their side at all times. Service dogs are trained using a very similar method to each other with few variations in steps.

Step 1 – Getting the right dog

A service dog will always start their training at a young age. This is because a young puppy is quicker at learning information that is needed to be a service dog. Whilst a young puppy is needed, to young and the puppy may reveal that it is a not suitable service dog. The ideal age is over 6 months, once the dog has matured enough to shows its personality as well as its attention span and its intelligence for learning skills. The right balance of emotion is also needed within a service dog. The puppy must be willing to please people, ensuring it is willing to learn the skills that will be taught to it so that it and make other people proud of it. The puppy must also be quick to respond, either to the environment or commands. They must be alert to what’s happening around them but when a command is given to the puppy like ‘sit’ or ‘wait’, the puppy must focus only on the command without fidgeting or looking away.

Step 2 – Preparing the dog

The first step in training a god is to have the dog neutered. For female dogs, they will emit a scent when in heat, causing them to be unable to work and attracting other male dogs to mate with. As for male dogs, when in heat, they will become more territorial towards other dogs and will seek female dogs in heat.

Step 3 – Basic command training

The first step to train a service dog is to train them basically, everyday commands that a young dog or puppy may learn usually. These include commands like ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘follow’. These basic commands will allow you to assess if the dog is willing to learn the skills needed to develop into a service dog. They will also aid in training further skills down the line due to the use of basic commands.

Step 4 - Behaviour

While public behaviour is not a priority at this stage, basic behaviour both inside and outside is needed. At this stage, a dog will be tough to walk alongside the owner or handler while outside and will remain behaved inside a building. They will also be taught to focus the handler or owner despite the nearby environmental distractions like other people or dogs. Another skill that would be taught is knowledge of a command that will mean that the dog is off duty and allowed to go away of its own free will to socialise with other and play. This is an important skill that must be taught to a service dog as constant work will lead to bad behaviour due to lack of enjoyment and freedom.

Step 5 – Specialised skill training

At this stage, dogs will begin to learn skills and commands related to their service. Dogs for the blind will learn commands to lead someone to a location whilst hearing dogs will alert the owner of common noises like door bells. The range of skills and commands taught to the dog will vary depending on the amount of assistance it will provide, from simply alerting the owner of a sound to aiding in gathering objects for an owner.

Step 6 – Public behaviour

A dog will have learnt the majority of what is expected of them when in public, but this is when you refine what they should know. On a walk, a dog may go investigate sounds or smells that seem interesting, while acceptable for a dog ‘off duty’, when on duty, the dog must learn to refrain from doing this, focusing only on aiding the handler or owner and not on the distractions. They will also be taught how to indicate their needs discreetly so that when they need to go to the toilet for the example, the handler or owner will know to take them out and allow the dog to do what they need to once command.

Step 7 - Certification

Finally, once done, you can certify your dog. While not always necessary, certifying a dog for usage as a service dog will allow them access to areas where dogs are usually not allowed. It will also mean that a dog is in good health once a vet has checked them over and that the dog has completed their training.

Why Service Dog And Registration Is Important

Getting service dog for an Emotional Support purpose:

Service animals are the dogs and pets which are trained and kept by the persons who are not fit physically and they need some help to move their things or spend time with. For this purpose many people have got service dogs and these have been proven very good. But getting and training a service dog is not an easy task the first step towards this process is service dog registry and getting an ESA letter.

Purpose of registration service dog:

If you are keeping a service dog this is must thing for you to get some proof called ESA from any concerned authority to prove that you are keeping the right kind of service dog and this dog is meeting all the necessary requirements which are mandatory for any service dog. Service dog registry is also necessary if you want to take your service dog to any public place or want to travel with it.

Who can give you license:

If you’re looking for the person to get your service dog registered and to get ESA letter or license you should look for only a mental health expert who has been given the authority to give and writer ESA letter for any service dog. A psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist or anyone else can be the writer. But the only requirement is that the person should possess the license from the government to write the letter. Before going for any specialist you need to make sure that you’re approaching the right person for the job. There are so many people sitting in the market who are claiming to help you to get your service dog registered but if they don’t have a legitimate license then they are scam.

When will you renew the registration?

If you have registered your service dog and have got ESA letter then you can use that letter for long time period. But you should not have a letter which is older than a year. Although for a service dog you don’t need to get letters on monthly basis, however you need to renew the letter after six to 9 months. Authorities appreciate if you have a recent ESA letter. Once you have registered your dog and you’re travelling then you need to carry the vaccine and health records of the ESA letter with you while traveling.

If you’re having a service dog it is necessary for you to get your service dog registered. You can’t take your service dog with you on travel or in some formal public places for service if you haven’t registered it yet. Also you need to make sure that you contact to the right person for the registration and you’re renewing your registration after certain amount of time. If your dog is not registered and you are using it for the service purpose then concerned authorities can charge you and would not allow you to take your service dog with you.
